Northwest Africa 13742 (NWA 13742)


Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: Thirty-four samples with a TKW of 271.6 g were found in December 2020 by anonymous prospectors in Mauritania. John Higgins purchased the samples from a Mauritanian meteorite dealer in 2020.

Physical characteristics: Samples are irregularly shaped and have a dark exterior lacking fusion crust. Some samples contain small holes that may represent vesicles. The cut face shows the interior is composed of abundant light-colored crystalline clasts set in a dark matrix.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is a breccia composed of mm-sized angular, basaltic-textured clasts set within a comminuted matrix of related debris. Pyroxenes are exsolved and both pyroxene and plagioclase show clouding by opaques and other phases. Additional minerals are: ilmenite, chromite, a silica polymorph, phosphates and terrestrial barite.

Geochemistry: low Ca pyroxene (Fs64.1±1.0Wo2.6±0.7, Fe/Mn=30.5±1.1, Mg#=34.2±0.6, n=12); high Ca pyroxene (Fs29.1±1.7Wo42.6±2.0, Fe/Mn=31.9±1.0, n=12); plagioclase (An91.9±0.7Or0.4±0.1, n=9).

Classification: HED achondrite (eucrite). Mineral compositions and textures suggest sample is an equilibrated basaltic eucrite breccia (M-S3, low weathering).

Specimens: John Higgins holds the main masses. 7 slices, endpieces and fragments weighing 27.98 g, a polished mount and thin section are on deposit at App.
