Northwest Africa 14644 (NWA 14644)

Purchased: 2021 Nov

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, cumulate)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in November, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a coarse-grained monomict breccia predominantly composed of up to 4 mm sized orthopyroxene and abundant calcic plagioclase crystals set into more fine-grained related cataclastic matrix. Orthopyroxene contains augite exsolution lamellae and some SiO2-chromite symplectites. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and troilite. The meteorite contains shock melt veins. Secondary calcite and barite are present.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs31.5±0.3Wo2.2±0.5 (Fs30.9-31.8Wo1.7-3.3, FeO/MnO=26-28, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs11.9±0.2Wo44.4±0.2 (Fs11.6-12.1Wo44.2-44.8, FeO/MnO=19-24, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An92.7±0.6 (An91.5-93.5, n=7); Chromite: #Mg:9.2; Ti (apfu): 0.08; N=4
