Northwest Africa 14223 (NWA 14223)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in 2021.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is an eucrite-melt breccia composed of up to 2.0 mm sized mineral fragments set into abundant fine-grained and widely melted matrix. Predominant minerals are exsolved pyroxenes (low Ca-pyroxene with Ca-pyroxene exsolutions and vice versa) and calcic plagioclase. Pyroxenes are heavily fractured and contain fine-grained cataclastic zones. Mineral grains are partly resorbed where in contact with the melt that shows abundant schlieren. Minor phases include Ti-chromite, ilmenite, and FeS. No metallic iron has been detected. Contains secondary calcite and barite.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host crystals to augite exsolutions: Fs43.1±0.1Wo2.6±0.1 (Fs42.9-43.4Wo2.4-2.9, FeO/MnO=28-31, n=10); augite exsolutions: Fs18.2±0.5Wo43.6±0.4 (Fs17.6-19.0Wo42.8-44.3, FeO/MnO=22-27, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An91.6±0.6 (An90.3-92.3, n=11)
