Writeup from MB 109:

Northwest Africa 13434 (NWA 13434)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020 February

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a Morrocan dealer at the mineral show in Munich, Germany.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a melt breccia predominantly composed of large up to 700 µm sized exsolved pyroxene grains set into a feldspar-dominated matrix. Pyroxenes are partly to completely recrystallized and often display mottled compositional zoning. In recrystallized regions feldspar typically shows fibrous textures indicative for crystallization from a melt. No lithic clasts have been found. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, and zircon. No metallic iron has been found. Some regions show brownish staining due to terrestrial weathering; secondary barite is present.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs57.6±1.8Wo4.1±1.6 (Fs55.0-60.4Wo1.9-6.6, n=17, FeO/MnO=27-31); Ca-pyroxene: Fs25.6±0.6Wo43.7±0.6 (Fs24.9-27.2Wo41.6-44.4, n=18, FeO/MnO=26-34); calcic plagioclase: An93.0±0.7 (An91.8-94.2, n=14)
