Northwest Africa 14174 (NWA 14174)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Apr

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: Purchased by Jesper Grønne in April 2021 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Monomict melt-breccia composed of microgabbroic eucrite clasts and related crystalline debris set in a sparsely vesicular melt rock matrix of parallel-grown pyroxene and calcic plagioclase with accessory silica polymorph, chromite (with variable Ti content), ilmenite and troilite. Pyroxene both in lithic clasts and the matrix is exsolved pigeonite containing discontinuous and deformed augite exsolution lamellae.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene host (Fs57.5-62.9Wo2.6-4.3, FeO/MnO = 31-34, N = 3), augite exsolution lamellae (Fs25.9-27.6Wo43.7-44.3, FeO/MnO = 29-32, N = 4), plagioclase (An89.1-91.0Or0.4-0.5, N = 3).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict melt-breccia).

Specimens: 23.7 g in the form of a polished endcut at UWB; remainder with Mr. J. Grønne.
