Northwest Africa 14386 (NWA 14386)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: Puchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2020 from a Moroccan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, Brown U.) Sparse gabbroic eucrite clasts are present within a melt-textured, partly glassy matrix. Lithic clasts are composed of exsolved pigeonite (pale orange in thin section) and calcic plagioclase (with polycrystalline or quenched melt textures) together with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite, chromite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs43.7-45.4Wo2.3-2.8, FeO/MnO = 29-31, N = 7), augite (Fs18.6-20.5Wo43.4-41.4, FeO/MnO = 25-26, N = 2), plagioclase (An88.1-88.6Or0.9-0.4, N = 3).

Classification: Eucrite (melt matrix breccia).

Specimens: 21.2 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler.
