Northwest Africa 12513 (NWA 12513)

Purchased: 2018 Aug

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: Four similar stones (total 2545 g) were recovered ~50 m apart at a location in Algeria, and were purchased by Mbark Arjdal in August 2018 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Very fresh monomict gabbroic eucrite specimen composed of coarse grained lithic clasts in a sparse matrix of related crystalline debris. Major minerals are low-Ca pyroxene and calcic plagioclase together with accessory silica polymorph and ilmenite (associated with multiple small grains of zircon). Some pyroxene has unexsolved pigeonite cores whereas other pyroxenes have exsolved into augite lamellae within host orthopyroxene.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene cores (Fs31.9-32.1Wo6.2-5.6, FeO/MnO = 29, N = 2), orthopyroxene host (Fs60.6Wo4.5, FeO/MnO = 34), clinopyroxene exsolution lamellae (Fs26.2-29.1Wo43.7-40.6, FeO/MnO = 31-35, N = 2), plagioclase (An84.3-87.9Or1.5-0.7, N = 2).

Classification: Eucrite (monomict breccia, gabbroic).

Specimens: 33.5 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
