Northwest Africa 12996 (NWA 12996) Western Sahara Find: 2019 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict) History: Found in Western Sahara in spring 2019. Purchased in Mauritania in the summer of 2019. Physical characteristics: Dozens of specimens mostly broken pieces, fresh black fusion crust, saw cut reveals a mildly brecciated texture with basaltic clasts set in dark-gray groundmass. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination shows a mix of pyroxene and plagioclase grains most in the range 200-500 μm. Many pyroxene grains have exsolution lamellae. Ubiquitous minor FeTi-oxide, troilite, and silica observed. Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Low-Ca pyroxene Fs54.8±3.1Wo4.5±4.5, Fe/Mn=36±1, n=9; high-Ca pyroxene Fs34.7Wo30.9, Fe/Mn=34, n=1; plagioclase An80.1±6.1, n=2. Classification: Monomict eucrite Specimens: 22.6 g on deposit at UNM, DPitt holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
