Northwest Africa 14028 (NWA 14028)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, monomict)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in late 2020.

Physical characteristics: Light-brownish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a monomict basaltic breccia composed of coarse- and more fine-grained regions both dominated by exsolved pyroxene and often lath-shaped calcic plagioclase. Grain sizes are about 800 µm in the coarse-grained and about 250 µm in the fine-grained areas. Minor phases include silica, chromite, FeS, and ilmenite. No metallic iron has been detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene: Fs56.1±0.3Wo2.1±0.4 (Fs55.3-56.6Wo1.8-3.2, FeO/MnO=31-32, n=10); Ca-pyroxene: Fs23.2±0.7Wo44.6±0.7 (Fs22.2-24.2Wo43.4-45.6, FeO/MnO=27-30, n=9); calcic plagioclase: An89.7±0.6 (An88.7-90.7, n=11)
