Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13944 (NWA 13944)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: December, 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict)

History: The meteorite was found 2019 in the Adrar region, Algeria, initially purchased by Mr. Adrián Contreras Gómez from a local meteorite dealer in Tindouf, Algeria, and finally bought by the main mass holder in December, 2020.

Physical characteristics: Light grayish rock without fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a fragmental breccia composed of lithic and mineral clasts set in a more fine-grained clastic matrix. Lithic clasts include up to 5 mm sized basaltic and black impact melt fragments. Mineral phases are predominantly up to 700 µm sized exsolved pyroxene, compositionally homogeneous low-Ca pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase grains. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, fayalite, and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: large low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs36.9±0.5Wo3.4±0.8 (Fs36.4-38.0Wo2.5-5.2, FeO/MnO=26-32, n=11); low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs59.5±1.0Wo3.4±1.2 (Fs57.3-60.5Wo2.2-6.0, FeO/MnO=28-31, n=9); Ca-pyroxene exsolution lamellae: Fs25.1±0.2Wo42.0±0.2 (Fs24.8-25.4Wo41.6-42.3, FeO/MnO=26-32, n=10); calcic plagioclase: An90.4±0.5 (An89.6-91.2, n=12)
