Writeup from MB 111:

Erg Atouila 002 (EA 002)        22º14.6184’N, 5º59.6502’W

Gao, Mali

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Diogenite)

History: A large number of pieces of different sizes, ranging from a few grams to the main masses of 1370, 561, and 535 g, were found in a region (see coordinates) 214 km SW of Taoudenni, Mali in Oct. and Nov 2020. Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) purchased the samples from a meteorite dealer in Mauritania in July 2021.

Physical characteristics: Sample has an ovoid shape and is yellowish orange in color. A small patch of black fusion crust covers a portion of the sample. Other areas show orange staining from oxidation.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is an aggregate of fractured, 250-1024 µm orthopyroxene grains. Orthopyroxenes contain exsolved Cpx inclusions. Additional minerals are: chromite, Si polymorphs, FeS and rare Ni-free iron metal. Breccia composed of coarse-grained lithic clasts and fine polycrystalline clasts of orthopyroxene. Silicates show blebs of FeS. Additional minerals are: chromite and troilite. polymorphs, FeS and rare Ni-free iron metal. Breccia composed of coarse-grained lithic clasts and fine polycrystalline clasts of orthopyroxene. Silicates show blebs of FeS. Additional minerals are: chromite and troilite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) low Ca pyroxene Fs24.7±0.1Wo1.9±0.0, Fe/Mn=26.7±0.9, n=10

Classification: HED achondrite (diogenite) Texture, mineralogy and Fe/Mn ratio suggest sample is a diogenite.

Specimens: Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) holds the 1370g main mass. A polished thin section and 42.1 g individual are on deposit at App.
