Northwest Africa 12261 (NWA 12261) Algeria Purchased: 2018 Aug Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H3) History: Found near Ain Saleh, Algeria, and purchased by Ben Hoefnagels in August 2018 from a Moroccan dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Closely packed, relatively small, well-formed chondrules (420±280 µm, N = 20) are set in finer grained matrix containing merrillite and abundant metal. A large (1.6 cm across) equilibrated H5 clast is present in the studied thin section. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa0.9-23.5, Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.02-0.04 wt.%, mean 0.03±0.01 wt.%, N = 8), orthopyroxene (Fs3.8-16.7Wo0.4-1.2, N = 3), subcalcic augite (Fs10.0Wo27.6). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 5.43. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H3). Specimens: 25.5 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. B. Hoefnagels. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
