Northwest Africa 15320 (NWA 15320)

Purchased: 2022 Jan

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4)

History: Purchased by Wenxi Jin and Ziyao Wang in January 2022 from a dealer in Agadir, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Relatively small, well-formed equilibrated chondrules are set in a fine-grained opaque matrix containing relatively Ni-rich kamacite, troilite and pentlandite. The chondrules in this specimen appear to be very fresh and unstained, whereas metal in the matrix has been partially to wholly altered to Fe oxides.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa20.5±0.2, range Fa20.2-20.6, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs17.6±0.2Wo1.4±0.6, range Fs17.3-17.8Wo0.8-2.0, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs11.6Wo26.3; Fs10.0±0.9Wo34.1±0.9, range Fs9.6-10.3Wo34.7-33.4; N = 3), augite (Fs7.0Wo42.1), plagioclase (Ab67.1An32.0Or0.9). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 5.17.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H4). Mafic silicate compositions in this large specimen are at the high end of the range for H chondrites.

Specimens: 20.6 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Wenxi Jin and WangZ.
