Northwest Africa 12679 (NWA 12679)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5, melt breccia)

History: Purchased by Larry Atkins from Morocco in January 2019.

Physical characteristics: Single stone; saw-cut surfaces reveal a fragmental breccia with melt rock veins crosscutting host chondrite. Metal grains scattered throughout. Oxidation staining visible.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination shows many melt rock veins crosscutting H5 chondrite domains with texturally equilibrated chondrules and recrystallized matrix. Plagioclase grain size up to 30 μm in diameter. Abundant Fe-Ni metal. Metal and sulfide blebs are present in shock melt veins. Numerous Fe-oxide veinlets are found throughout the meteorite.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa19.0±0.6, Fe/Mn=38±2, n=10; low-Ca pyroxene Fs16.5±0.5Wo1.1±0.5, Fe/Mn=24±4, n=7; shock melt SiO2=48.9±1.4, TiO2=0.14±0.02, Al2O3=3.0±0.4, Cr2O3=0.63±0.08, MgO=29.8±2.0, FeO=13.1±0.5, Mn=0.41±0.01, CaO=2.4±0.4, Na2O=0.98±0.14, K2O=0.17±0.03 (all wt%), Fe/Mn=31±1, n=4.

Classification: H5-melt breccia

Specimens: 29.2 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Larry Atkins holds the main mass.
