Northwest Africa 8438 (NWA 8438) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2013 Jun Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite) History: Purchased in 2013 in Ensisheim Physical characteristics: Cut surface reveals a dark brecciated interior. Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Brecciated crystalline rock composed mostly of pyroxene and plagioclase, with accessory silica, chromite, ilmenite, troilite, metal. Both eucrite and diogenite material are present. Some melt clasts are present. Geochemistry: Eucrite: Orthopyroxene Fs53.7-62.2Wo10.8-3.2, FeO/MnO = 32.7, diogenite clasts: Orthopyroxene Fs26.9Wo3.0, FeO/MnO = 32.7. Plagioclase An93.8 Or0.2. Magnetic susceptibility log χ = 3.32 (χ in 10-9 m3/kg). Classification: Achondrite (howardite). Strong weathering. Specimens: 4 g in CEREGE, main mass with Labenne | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
