Northwest Africa 13345 (NWA 13345)

Purchased: 2020

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Mauritania.

Physical characteristics: Individual almost completely covered by shiny fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a polymict breccia composed of a large diversity of mostly angular mineral fragments and basaltic clasts set into a fine-grained clastic mineral matrix. Dominant minerals are diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene (about 60 vol%), Fe-rich low-Ca pyroxenes with augite exsolution lamellae, Fe-rich low-Ca pyroxene, magmatically zoned low-Ca pyroxenes, and calcic plagioclase all with highly variable grain sizes. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and metallic iron. The meteorite contains cm-sized coarse-grained basaltic clasts.

Geochemistry: eucritic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs58.3±0.2Wo5.4±0.1 (Fs58.0-58.7Wo5.3-5.5, n=10, FeO/MnO=28-31); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs27.3±0.2Wo43.3±0.2 (Fs26.9-27.6Wo43.1-43.6, n=10, FeO/MnO=30-33); diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs27.4±0.6Wo3.3±0.7 (Fs26.9-28.6Wo2.3-3.8, n=10, FeO/MnO=24-34); low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs40.1±0.3Wo2.6±0.1 (Fs39.5-40.4Wo2.5-2.7, n=7, FeO/MnO=26-28); zoned low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs39.9±8.0Wo5.2±0.3 (Fs31.4-49.7Wo4.9-5.7, n=6, FeO/MnO=25-31); calcic plagioclase: An93.4±0.7 (An92.7-94.5, n=10)
