Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 13510 (NWA 13510)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020 Aug

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Purchased by Bob Falls in August 2020 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Complex polymict breccia composed predominantly of angular grains of disaggregated eucritic crystalline debris plus angular grains of zoned diogenitic orthopyroxene (with more ferroan rims) and sparse lithic clasts in a finer grained matrix. Lithic clasts include eucrites (with intergranular to subophitic textures), sparse eucritic breccia, and sparse polygranular diogenite (composed of orthopyroxene exhibiting undulose extinction). The overall proportion of diogenitic material is estimated from optical microscopy and back-scattered images to be ~15 vol.%. Other minerals include pigeonite, augite, calcic plagioclase, olivine, silica polymorph, hedenbergite, ilmenite, Ti-free chromite and altered troilite.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (cores Fs25.1-30.1Wo1.0-3.4, FeO/MnO = 29-36, N = 3; rims Fs53.2-53.4Wo2.4-2.7, FeO/MnO = 28, N = 2), pigeonite (Fs39.1-59.2Wo7.8-14.6, FeO/MnO = 30-33, N = 3), augite (Fs21.9-30.6Wo43.9-40.8, FeO/MnO = 26-30, N = 2), hedenbergite (Fs59.8Wo35.3, FeO/MnO = 43), olivine (Fa51.3-59.2, FeO/MnO = 43-48, N = 2), plagioclase (An82.1-92.3Or0.8-0.2, N = 4).

Classification: Howardite.

Specimens: 26.6 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. R. Falls.
