Northwest Africa 14796 (NWA 14796) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 27 Oct 2014 Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite) History: Purchased from a Moroccan dealer at the Munich Mineral Show, Germany Physical characteristics: Light to dark grayish individual mainly without fusion crust. Cut face reveals light-gray, brecciated, interior with larger mineral and lithic clasts up to 5 mm. Common metal inclusions. Magnetic susceptibility, measured on two fragments is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.48 and log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.18, with an average 4.33. Petrography: Lithic and mineral clasts (up to several mm) set in clastic matrix. Main minerals are low-Ca pyroxene, plagioclase. Minor and accessory minerals include kamacite (5 vol%), ilmenite, chromite, troilite. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene: diogenitic Fs28.5±4.1Wo2.8±1.6 (n=38), eucritic Fs47.4±5.9Wo5.9±2.3 (n=5), overall FeO/MnO=32.9±7.4 (n=43). Plagioclase An89.6±5.0Ab10.1±4.7Or0.3±0.3 (n=16), range An78.7-96.3. Classification: Achondrite (howardite). Diogenite material, mainly as lithic clasts, makes up about 30 vol% of the meteorite. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
