Northwest Africa 14871 (NWA 14871)

Purchased: 2022 Jan

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in January, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Grayish fragment almost completely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a complex polymict breccia composed of up to 4 mm sized basaltic and impact melt clasts as well as up 3 mm sized mineral framents in a fine-grained clastic matrix. Mineral fragments include orthopyroxene of diogenite composition (about 20 vol.%), exsolved pyroxene, magnesian and ferroan low-Ca pyroxene, zoned low-Ca pyroxene, and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, troilite and metallic iron.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs53.4±0.2Wo2.0±0.1 (Fs53.0-53.7Wo1.9-2.1, FeO/MnO=31-34, n=7); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs22.9±0.2Wo42.6±0.3 (Fs22.6-23.0Wo42.1-43.0, FeO/MnO=27-29, n=7); diogenetic low-Ca pyroxene: Fs21.8±0.2Wo2.2±0.3 (Fs21.5-22.2Wo1.9-2.6, FeO/MnO=25-27, n=10); magnesian low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs17.0±0.1Wo1.1±0.1 (Fs16.9-17.1Wo1.0-1.1, FeO/MnO=24-31, n=7); ferroan low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs33.7±0.6Wo3.1±0.8 (Fs16.9-17.1Wo1.0-1.1, FeO/MnO=26-28, n=7); zoned low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs32.0±4.5Wo3.0±0.2 (Fs26.4-37.4Wo2.5-3.2, FeO/MnO=28-32, n=8); calcic plagioclase: An90.0±1.7 (An88.4-94.2, n=8)
