Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14563 (NWA 14563)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Jul

Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite)

History: Purchased by Philip Mani in July 2021 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Highly shocked and partially melted breccia composed of lithic clasts and related crystalline debris plus orthopyroxene of diogenitic composition (~30 vol.%, exhibiting undulose extinction). Lithic clasts have fine grained, intergranular textures and are composed of exsolved pigeonite (highly recrystallized to very fine grained mosaics) and anorthite (variously polycrystalline, spherulitic but birefringent, or transformed to isotropic maskelynite) together with accessory silica polymorph, ilmenite, low-Ti chromite and altered Fe metal. Some fine grained melt veins with fluidal textures and incorporated crystalline debris are present, as well as patches and vesicle fillings of secondary calcite.

Geochemistry: Diogenitic orthopyroxene (Fs34.2-35.5Wo2.1-2.5, FeO/MnO = 31-36, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene hosts (Fs42.8-45.5Wo4.3-7.3, FeO/MnO = 28-29, N = 2), augite exsolution lamellae (Fs17.8-23.2Wo38.9-45.1, FeO/MnO = 23-26, N = 2), ferroan low-Ca pyroxene (Fs53.3Wo3.8, FeO/MnO = 32), pigeonite (39.0-40.9Wo9.1-10.2, FeO/MnO = 31-33, N = 2), augite inclusion in plagioclase (Fs13.0Wo45.0, FeO/MnO = 27), anorthite (An90.4-93.4Or0.3, N = 3).

Classification: Howardite (highly shocked).

Specimens: 34.7 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. P. Mani.
