Nova 058

Minas Gerais, Brazil

Find: before 1968

Classification: Iron meteorite (IAB-sLL)

History: The meteorite was given before 1968 to Djalma Guimarães (now deceased) from Industrial Technology Institute (ITI, Minas Gerais) while he was working in João Pinheiro (Minas Gerais). The meteorite was then kept by Prof. Cláudio Vieira Dutra until the inauguration of the Djalma Guimarães Museum in 2000.

Physical characteristics: Semi prismatic shape.

Petrography: (F. N. Puchetta, UFOP and M. E. Zucolotto MN/UFRJ) - Etched sections display a coarse widmanstätten structure with bandwidth of 1.80±0.50 mm. Neumann lines are common. Plessite occurs in minor amounts as degenerated comb, pearlitic and spheroidized plessite. Some acicular and martensitic plessite is also observed. Cohenite is very common on most sections. Troilite and schreibersite are also present. Rhabdites are very common and tetragonal prisms in some kamacite lamellae.

Geochemistry: 7.9 wt% Ni; 0.47 wt% Co; 80.0 ppm Ga; 335 ppm Ge; 1.66 ppm Au (INAA, J.T. Wasson, UCLA)
