Writeup from MB 108:

Smolenice        48°31.2’N, 17°23.9’E

Zapadoslovensky, Slovakia

Find: 2012 Mar 04

Classification: Iron meteorite (IVA)

History: On March 11, 2012, a meteorite was found in the forest. As the finder was not geologist and could not identify the object as a meteorite, he left it in place. He returned after three weeks and found it again on April 3, 2012.

Physical characteristics: One piece of 13.95 kg was found. The meteorite has a brown-colored surface that represents oxidized iron minerals.

Petrography: M. Gargulák (SGUDS) and D. Ozdín (CUB). The meteorite is composed of kamacite, taenite, troilite and daubréelite. There is a Widmanstätten pattern present. Troilite forms nodules in metal. Kamacite dominates over taenite. The average bandwidth of kamacite is 0.22 mm.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: ICP-MS and ICP-AES (S. Strekopytov, NHM): Ni 8.10, Co 0.378, Fe 88.7, P 0.05, S <0.006 (all in wt%); Ge < 0.7, Ir 1.67, Ga 1.80, Cr 87.3, Cu 135, As 4.52, Mo 5.82, Sn 1.53, W 0.565, Re 0.176, Ru 3.56, Rh 0.897, Pd 4.12, Au 1.19, Zn <5, B <0.68, Pb <0.06 (all in ppm).

Classification: Iron, fine octahedrite (Of), IVA group. Weathering of the meteorite is mostly minimal, moderate at the rims.

Specimens: The anonymous finder owns the main piece of the meteorite. The type specimens: 24.5 (CUB), 28.6 (SNM).
