Northwest Africa 12915 (NWA 12915)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped)

Physical characteristics: A single brownish mass. Cut surface reveals fresh metallic interior.

Petrography: Etching of a polished section reveals a plessitic octahedrite structure with finger plessite. One 100 µm × 1 mm polycristalline troilite grain is visible on the studied 1.5 cm2 section.

Geochemistry: (J.T. Wasson, UCLA): INAA data, Ni = 203, Co = 4.72 (both mg/g), Cu = 1090, Ga = 1.2, As = 15.8, W= 0.12, Re <28, Ir = 0.26, Pt = 2.07, Au = 2.91 (all µg/g). The Cu content is unusually high.

Classification: Iron, ungrouped. Ungrouped designation based on composition; no close compositional relatives among 105 other ungrouped irons.

Specimens: Type specimen (33.7 g) at CEREGE. Main mass with Albert Jambon.
