Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14788 (NWA 14788)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Orientated individual with black to brownish regmaglypted exterior.

Petrography: Etching of a polished section reveals a very fine octahedrite texture with well-developed Widmanstätten pattern composed of about 10-300 µm wide kamacite bands, taenite, and plessite. Some regions are recrystallized with polygonal kamacite grains. Occasionally, Neumann lines are found. Troilite nodules with daubréelite exsolutions are abundant and often rimmed by schreibersite. Terrestrial alteration occurs along fractures and sulfide inclusions.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data (V. Debaille, ULB): Ni = 6.42, Co = 0.40, P = 0.57 (all wt%); Cr = 52.9, Cu = 113.0, Ge = 5.25, Ga = 61.56, As = 12.02, Mo = 5.58, Pd = 2.42, Sb = 0.25, Ir = 0.10, Au = 0.80 (all ppm)

Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped). Ungrouped based on Ge and Ga contents that do not fit any known iron meteorite group.
