Northwest Africa 14402 (NWA 14402)

Morocco

Purchased: Aug 2019

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: Purchased by Sean Tutorow from a dealer in August 2019 in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark brown stone with preserved fusion crust. Cut surface shows densely packed chondrules within a dark brown matrix.

Petrography: (E. Obengo, UBayr) Petrography analysis shows chondrules (barred Ol, porphyritic Ol, porphyritic Px, or radial Px with opaques) with mean chondrule diameter 670 ± 306 µm (n=12).

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa25.4±1.9, Cr2O3=0.04±0.04%, Fe/Mn = 56±9 (n=16); low-Ca pyroxene Fs19.9±6.3Wo2.7±3.9 (n=10).

Classification: L3. Possible sub-type >3.7 based on olivine composition.

Specimens: 52.6 g including a thin section and polished mount at UBayr. S. Tutorow holds the main mass.
