Northwest Africa 14787 (NWA 14787)

Purchased: 2021 Jun

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in June 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed, unequilibrated chondrules containing either devitrified glass or clear glass are set in a fine grained matrix containing altered kamacite, taenite, troilite, chromite and chlorapatite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa23.7±13.1, range Fa1.1-42.5, N = 14; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.01-0.66 wt.%, mean 0.13 wt.%, sd 0.20 wt.%, N = 12), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs16.8±8.6Wo1.1±1.1, range Fs2.4-23.9Wo0.2-2.9, N = 7). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.64.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3).

Specimens: 23.6 g including one polished thick section at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
