Meteorite Type: L3 chondrite

 

Macroscopic Description: Robbie Marlow,

LEW88617 is approximately 75% covered with dull black fusion crust. Interior matrix is medium gray and there are areas of heavy oxidation. Several millimeter-sized light and dark inclusions are visible.

 

Thin Section (,2) Description: Brian Mason

The section shows numerous chondrules and chondrule fragments, up to 1.8 mm across, in a dark matrix containing little nickel-iron and troilite. Weathering is extensive, with brown limonitic staining throughout the section. Microprobe analyses show olivine and pyroxene of variable compositions: olivine, Fa2-44, mean Fa22 (CV FeO is 41); pyroxene, Fs1-14. The meteorite is classified as an L3 chondrite (estimated L3.5).
