Northwest Africa 14604 (NWA 14604)

Morocco

Purchased: 2011

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4-6)

History: The meteorite was purchased in Tucson, Arizona in 2011 by D. Gregory from A. Aaronson. Specimen was investigated at UWO under the name DG-09-2011.

Physical characteristics: The specimen has a dark-brown, smooth fusion crust that is largely intact, with only minor pitting. There is little evidence of weathering. Physical properties (P. Cassidy, UWO): Grain density measured by He-pycnometry on a 35.73 g piece is 3.390±0.008 g/cm3. Magnetic susceptibility on the same piece is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.70.

Petrography: In a cut face, the interior is medium grey with abundant chondrules and some metal as well as a lighter colored 3 cm clast. In polished thin section, chondrules throughout the specimen are poorly defined, and many are fragmental. Extensive recrystallization of the matrix has occurred. A subangular 4 mm clast is of higher petrographic grade. Olivine grains show planar fractures but only weak mosaicism. Micro-XRD (R. Flemming, UWO) of the polished thin section shows notable diffraction streaks for olivine and pyroxene grains in 2D XRD, which indicates moderate shock. Within chondrules, mesostasis has been replaced by sub-micron plagioclase as confirmed by micro-XRD. Reflected light reveals only minor FeO replacement of the Ni-Fe metal. Fine scale schreibersite was associated with one large (~1 mm) kamacite grain as identified by micro-XRD. Troilite is abundant, as individual (0.5-1 mm) grains and dispersed within chondrules and matrix.

Geochemistry: EPMA: olivine Fa24.26±0.64 (n=20); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs19.25±0.68Wo1.68±0.45 (n=13).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite: L 4-6 breccia (S3) W1. Abundant fragmented chondrules and presence of clasts with higher petrographic grade indicate that this meteorite is a breccia.
