Northwest Africa 15226 (NWA 15226)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: May 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4-6)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in May, 2022.

Physical characteristics: Eight dark brownish fragments partially covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Chondritic brecccia composed of up to 5 mm sized L6 fragments (plagioclase grains size about 60 µm) in L4 type matrix that contains well defined chondrules and compositionally unequilibrated low-Ca pyroxene. Opaque phases are sulfides and metal.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa24.3±0.2 (Fa24.0-24.6, n=7); type 4 low-Ca pyroxene: Fs18.1±4.0Wo1.5±0.5 (Fs8.6-21.1Wo0.6-2.1, n=12); type 6 low-Ca pyroxene: Fs20.2±0.1Wo2.1±0.1 (Fs20.0-20.4Wo2.0-2.2, n=7);
