Northwest Africa 14648 (NWA 14648)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock largely covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a chondritic melt breccia composed of abundant, wide impact melt regions and some unmelted L4 type chondritic regions with well-defined, partly flattened chondrules with an apparent mean diameter of about 0.7 mm. In such regions olivine is compositionally equilibrated and low-Ca pyroxene unequilibrated. The shock melt is mostly recrystallized and contains characteristic FeNi metal and sulfide spherules.
