Northeast Africa 024 (NEA 024)

Libya

Purchased: 2020 Aug

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in August 2020 from a Libyan dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 870±350 µm, N = 25) are set in a dark, fine grained matrix containing troilite and altered kamacite. Some chondrules have intermediate plagioclase present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa23.1±16.7, range Fa1.9-55.2, N = 12; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.04-0.22 wt.%, mean 0.10±0.06 wt.%, N = 10), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs11.1±8.2Wo0.8±0.6, range Fs5.3-16.9Wo0.4-1.2, N = 2), pigeonite (Fs14.9±4.8Wo5.4±1.3, range Fs10.5-20.0Wo4.5-6.9, N = 3), subcalcic augite (Fs15.8±3.3Wo33.8±3.5, range Fs13.4-18.1Wo31.3-36.3, N = 2). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.84.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 20.1 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
