Northwest Africa 14490 (NWA 14490) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Jul Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3) History: Purchased by Shun-Chung Yang in July 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, Brown U.) Well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 940±570 µm, N = 25) are set in a fine grained matrix (~15 vol.%, red-brown in thin section) containing extensively altered kamacite, troilite and chromite, plus some secondary barite and calcite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa22.5±11.2, range Fa3.0-40.8, N = 11; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.03-0.12 wt.%, mean 0.07±0.03 wt.%, N = 10), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs20.9±13.9Wo1.0±0.8, range Fs2.0-34.8Wo0.34-2.3, N = 5), pigeonite (Fs6.1Wo10.6). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.33. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3). Specimens: 21 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C.
