Northwest Africa 14371 (NWA 14371)

Purchased: 2021 Apr

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Philip Mani in April 2021 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed, closely-packed, unequilibrated glass-bearing chondrules (apparent diameter 1010±830 µm, N = 25) are set in a fine grained matrix containing altered kamacite, taenite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa22.5±13.9, range Fa0.4-45.0, N = 9; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.05-0.41 wt.%, mean 0.15±0.09 wt%, N = 30), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs8.8±10.9Wo1.4±2.1, range Fs2.1-23.7Wo0.5-5.2, N = 5), subcalcic augite (Fs41.8Wo23.9), diopside (Fs9.3Wo38.1). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.82.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3).

Specimens: 38.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. P. Mani.
