Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14074 (NWA 14074) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Dec Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3) History: A lot of 21 identical-appearing, somewhat weathered stones was purchased by Shun-Chung Yang and Juan Chen in December 2020 from dealer in Tindouf, Algeria. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Well-formed, very closely packed chondrules (apparent diameter 1060±570 µm, N = 25) are set in a very sparse matrix (opaque in thin section) containing altered kamacite, taenite and troilite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa22.8±9.8, range Fa1.4-35.0, N = 10; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.04-0.18 wt.%, mean 0.12±0.05 wt.%, N = 8), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs16.1±6.1Wo1.9±1.2, range Fs7.2-20.7Wo0.3-3.3, N = 4), pigeonite (Fs22.3±6.1Wo6.1±0.7, range Fs18.0-26.6Wo6.6-5.6, N = 2), subcalcic augite (Fs29.8±5.7Wo31.9±1.2, range Fs25.8-33.8Wo32.7-31.0, N = 2). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.12. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3). LL group based on magnetic susceptibility and chondrule size. Specimens: 20.5 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang and Mr. J. Chen. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
