Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 14387 (NWA 14387) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3) History: Puchased by Nicholas Gessler in 2020 from a Moroccan dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-formed unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 800±270 µm, N = 25; one 2 mm) containing devitrified glass are set in a fine grained matrix containing stained metal, troilite and chromite. Olivine and pyroxene exhibit significant compositional zoning, and some shock darkening of mafic silicates is evident in thin section. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.8±6.0, range Fa10.4-32.7, Cr2O3 0.01-0.12 wt.%, mean 0.06±0.04 wt%, N = 13), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs18.0±11.5Wo1.4±1.5, range Fs6.7-33.3Wo0.3-3.6, N = 4). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.37. Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3). LL group based on magnetic susceptibility combined interpreted in the light of weathering grade W1. Specimens: 20.4 g plus one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. N. Gessler. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
