Northwest Africa 14470 (NWA 14470)

Purchased: 2021 Aug

Classification: LL3-melt breccia

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorites hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, in August, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock with mostly sandblasted surface.

Petrography: Chondritic melt breccia composed of up to 4 cm sized type 3 clasts set into abundant black shock melt. Type 3 fragments show a chondritic texture with well-defined, mostly rounded and partly packed chondrules with an apparent mean diameter of about 0.7 mm. The fine-grained shock melt is mostly recrystallized and contains entrained chondrule and mineral fragments partly with resorption textures as well as characteristic FeNi metal and sulfide spherules.
