Northwest Africa 12422 (NWA 12422)

Find: 2018 Oct

Classification: Lunar meteorite (feldspathic breccia)

History: Found in October 2018 in the Assa-Zag region of Morocco and purchased by Craig Zlimen in November 2018 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Very fine grained assemblage of mineral clasts (including anorthite, orthopyroxene, augite, rare zoned olivine) in a partly vitreous ("swirly") and sparsely vesicular matrix containing kamacite, chromite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Anorthite (An96.7-97.4Or0.1, N = 2), orthopyroxene (Fs24.6-26.6Wo3.9-4.1, FeO/MnO = 54-58, N = 2), pigeonite (Fs36.6Wo9.7, FeO/MnO = 71), augite (Fs15.3Wo40.1, FeO/MnO = 38), olivine (core Fa 15.1, FeO/MnO = 96; rim Fa24.7, FeO/MnO = 104).

Classification: Lunar (feldspathic regolith melt breccia).

Specimens: 9.5 g in the form of a polished endcut at UWB; remainder with Mr. C. Zlimen.
