Northwest Africa 14064 (NWA 14064)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Mar

Classification: Lunar meteorite (feldspathic breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Several small sand-colored fragments without fusion crust.

Petrography: Fragmental breccia composed of up to 1 cm feldspathic clasts in fine-grained partly shock molten matrix with flow textures. Minerals are predominantly plagioclase and olivine indicating the presence of abundant troctolitic material; augite and pigeonite are rare. Some olivines contain augite-chromite symplectites. Accessory phases are: FeS, ilmenite, Ti-bearing chromite, and silica as well as secondary barite, strontianite, and calcite.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa27.8±10.8 (Fa15.0-42.2, FeO/MnO=87±9, n=28); pigeonite: Fs27.7±3.6Wo11.1±1.4 (Fs23.8-32.6Wo8.3-13.5, FeO/MnO=55±6, n=17); Ca-pyroxene: Fs14.7±1.2Wo38.0±2.9 (Fs13.0-18.3Wo30.1-42.5, FeO/MnO=45±7, n=12); calcic plagioclase: An96.1±0.6 (An95.4-97.4, n=13)
