Northwest Africa 8674 (NWA 8674) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2012 Classification: Martian meteorite (basaltic breccia) History: Purchased by Jay Piatek from Morocco, 2012. Physical characteristics: Single stone, shiny, black exterior, saw cut reveals breccia with numerous dark and light colored fragmental crystals and polycrystalline lithologies, scattered spherules and spherical objects of variable size and texture, set in a dark gray, fine-grained groundmass, some opaques visible. Petrography: (A. Santos and C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of the polished deposit sample shows a polymict breccia with fragmental feldspar and pyroxene crystals up to 5 mm, although a few are euhedral. Basaltic, trachytic, andesitic, phosphate-rich clasts, iron-oxide-rich spherules, silicate-rich spherules, spherical matrix-rich objects, all set in a very fine-grained ground mass composed of feldspar, pyroxene, oxides, phosphates, zircon, and sulfide. Ubiquitous larger grains of magnetite + maghemite, Cl-apatite, chromite, and ilmenite throughout, two olivine grains found in one igneous clast. Geochemistry: (A. Santos and C. Agee, UNM) Large fragmental feldspars: plagioclase Ab51.4±5.2An46.4±5.8Or2.2±0.6, n=21; K-feldspar Ab13.4±2.4An2.0±0.9Or84.7±3.1, n=8; albite Ab88.4±5.5An4.3±2.9Or7.3±3.1, n=8. Igneous clast feldspars: plagioclase Ab60.5±8.3An36.4±9.6Or3.1±1.5, n=206; K-feldspar Ab20.0±8.2An3.0±2.0Or77.0±9.6, n=35; albite Ab83.9±11.2An7.3±6.0Or8.8±6.1, n=23. Large fragmental pyroxenes: low-Ca pyroxene Fs36.8±7.3Wo3.7±0.4, Fe/Mn=33±3, n=19; pigeonite Fs40.3±5.9Wo7.9±5.3, Fe/Mn=34±3, n=42; augite Fs34.9±9.3Wo38.4±3.6, Fe/Mn=29±5, n=45. Igneous clast pyroxenes: low-Ca pyroxene Fs35.2±5.7Wo3.1±1.0, Fe/Mn=34±6, n=121; pigeonite Fs31.2±4.5Wo10.1±3.9, Fe/Mn=34±4, n=81; augite Fs19.9±2.6Wo40.9±5.1, Fe/Mn=33±6, n=32. Olivine Fa32.5±0.7, Fe/Mn=57±4, NiO=0.009±0.003 (wt%), n=2. Classification: Martian (basaltic breccia). Paired with NWA 7034.
