Northwest Africa 14269 (NWA 14269) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Apr Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite) History: Purchased by Mark Lyon and Craig Zlimen in April 2021 from an Algerian dealer. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Diabasic texture with some preferred orientation of prismatic, zoned clinopyroxene grains (up to 2 mm) and lath-like maskelynite grains (up to 1.5 mm). Accessory phases include pyrrhotite (some stained), ulvöspinel (with variable Cr contents), ilmenite, silica polymorph, K-feldspar, merrillite and minor baddeleyite. Some small melt pockets containing "swirly" vesicular glass are present. Geochemistry: Subcalcic augite cores (Fs21.1-25.2Wo33.0-35.2, FeO/MnO = 25-30, N = 3), ferroan pigeonite rims (Fs51.2-62.9Wo12.8-15.4, FeO/MnO = 37-38, N = 3), ferropigeonite (Fs72.0Wo7.7, FeO/MnO = 36), maskelynite (An50.7-53.6Or1.4-2.1, N = 3), K-feldspar (Or62.9Ab26.7An10.4). Classification: Shergottite (aphyric, diabasic). Likely paired with NWA 12262 and other such stones. Specimens: 26.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M.
