Grove Mountains 020171 (GRV 020171) 72° 58' 34"S, 75° 15' 59"E Antarctica Found: 7 January 2003 Classification: Mesosiderite History: The meteorite was recovered by X. Qin on blue ice in Grove Mountains. It has an irregular shape with no fusion crust. It weighs 0.55 g. Petrography: The meteorite contains 18.9 vol% metallic Fe-Ni and troilite. The silicate fraction consists of large fragments mainly of low-Ca pyroxene, augite and plagioclase with less abundant silica. Low-Ca pyroxene fragments are heterogeneous, ranging up to 1.5 mm in maximum dimensions. Most of low-Ca pyroxene fragments are hypersthene and bronzite. Some pyroxene fragments show exsolution of augite. Minor chromite occurs, mainly close to metal. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (n=38, Fs24.3-56.6, average=Fs33.3; Wo1.8-6.6, average=Wo3.0), High-Ca pyroxene (n=10, Fs19.9-27.9, average=Fs25.1; Wo39.1-42.3, average=Wo40.9), Plagioclase (n=27, An88.3-95.7, average= An91.7; Ab4.0-11.1, average=Ab7.9; Or0.2-0.8, average=Or0.4). Classification: Achondrite (Mesosiderite); minimally weathered. Specimens: All of the sample mass and a polished thin section are on deposit at PRIC. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
