Northwest Africa 14144 (NWA 14144)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Jan

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in January 2021 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Aggregate composed predominantly of compositionally-zoned low-Ca pyroxene, anorthite and metal (~50 vol.%) together with accessory subcalcic augite, silica polymorph and merrillite (associated with minor stanfieldite). Pyroxene grains (some up to 1.8 cm in size) have more ferroan and more calcic rims relative to cores. Metal grains (some up to 1 cm in size) are composed of kamacite + taenite.

Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene cores (Fs23.3-23.7Wo1.0-1.9, FeO/MnO = 30, N = 2), low-Ca pyroxene rims (Fs31.4-33.2Wo4.2-5.9, FeO/MnO = 25-29, N = 4), subcalcic augite (Fs22.1Wo25.8, FeO/MnO = 20), anorthite (An91.3-91.4Or0.3, N = 2).

Classification: Mesosiderite.

Specimens: 31.8 g in the form of a polished slice at PSF; remainder with Mr. J. Whitcomb.
