Northwest Africa 12977 (NWA 12977)

Purchased: 2019 Aug

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Ordinary chondrite of low petrologic type, consisting of closely packed chondrules (up to 2.2 mm) and chondrule fragments with low amounts of interchondrule matrix. The mean apparent chondrule size is 560 μm (n=68). Metal is almost completely oxidized by terrestrial weathering.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: The mean olivine composition is Fa21.1±10.1 (5.1-44.4; n=26); the mean low-Ca pyroxene composition is Fs13.0±6.7 Wo1.4±1.2 (Fs1.7-31.7 Wo0.3-4.4; n=32).

Classification: LL chondrite based on the mean chondrule size. Petrologic subtype estimated as 3.5 due to the chemical variation of olivine (PMD of Fa values: 48).
