Northwest Africa 14322 (NWA 14322) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, polymict) History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco. Physical characteristics: Grayish rock largely covered with fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia consisting of up to 2.0 cm sized basaltic, gabbroic, and dark impact melt rock clasts and up to 1.5 mm sized mineral fragments in fine-grained clastic and related matrix. Main mineral phases are exsolved pyroxene, low-Ca pyroxene (about 5 vol%), and calcic plagioclase. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, and troilite. No metallic iron was detected. Shock melt veins and pockets are present. Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to augite exsolution lamellae: Fs58.4±0.5Wo3.1±0.5 (Fs57.4-58.8Wo2.7-4.1, n=9, FeO/MnO=28-32); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs28.4±0.5Wo40.4±0.6 (Fs28.0-29.7Wo39.3-40.9, n=12, FeO/MnO=25-28); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs22.2±0.2Wo3.0±0.1 (Fs21.8-22.4Wo2.9-3.0, n=10, FeO/MnO=26-30); low-Ca-pyroxene: Fs34.9±0.3Wo2.1±0.1 (Fs34.3-35.3Wo1.9-2.2, n=12, FeO/MnO=29-35); calcic plagioclase: An85.9±4.6 (An79.7-90.4, n=16) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
