Northwest Africa 16497 (NWA 16497)

Purchased: 2023 Nov

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4, melt breccia)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Several light grayish-brownish fragments some of which partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Chondritic melt breccia composed of up to 4.5 cm sized mostly angular L4 clasts set in finely recrystallized melt rock matrix. L4 chondritic regions contain well-defined mostly flattened and partly packed chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 0.7 mm). Chondrule olivine is compositionally equilibrated and low-Ca pyroxene unequilibrated. The shock melt contains characteristic FeNi metal and sulfide spherules.
