Northwest Africa 13861 (NWA 13861) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2020 Sep Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia) History: Purchased in September 2020 by Juan Avilés Poblador on behalf of UAlic from a dealer in Chinguetti, Mauritania. Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of lithic eucrite clasts (exhibiting intergranular textures and variable fine to medium grainsize) within a sparse matrix consisting of dark glass (sepia brown in thin section with "swirly" texture) plus engulfed eucritic crystalline debris. Major minerals are exsolved pigeonite and calcic plagioclase accompanied by accessory silica polymorph, Na-free merrillite, ilmenite, troilite, Ti-chromite, low-Ti chromite and zircon. In spite of the presence of quenched melt matrix, the plagioclase does not show optical evidence of extensive shock. Geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (Fs63.0-65.1Wo1.8-2.0, FeO/MnO = 29-33, N = 5), augite (Fs27.4-29.4Wo42.4-43.8, FeO/MnO = 29-33, N = 5), plagioclase (An86.4-91.6Or1.7-0.2, N = 5). Classification: Eucrite (melt matrix breccia). Specimens: 20.9 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder in the collection of UAlic. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
