Outer Recovery Icefields 18009 (OUT 18009) 81°28.99133’S, 18°00.78550’W Antarctica Find: 2019 Jan 09 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5) History: The meteorite was recovered as part of the Lost Meteorites of Antarctica project. which was funded in the UK by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Manchester. These samples were collected as part of the project’s first field season in austral summer December 2018 - January 2019 by a two person field party consisting of Katherine Joy and Julie Baum. Found on blue ice surface/snow. Altitude 1407 m. Physical characteristics: Mass: 329.81 g. Pieces: 1. Dimensions: 10 × 8 × 7 cm. A blocky. part stone with 40% black fusion crust. brown exterior and brown interior. Petrography: Some well-defined chondrules (up to 0.5 mm in diameter) and coarse-grained matrix. Metal and sulfide throughout. some rimming chondrules. Plagioclase grains up to 0.3 mm. Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: All analyses by EPMA. Olivine Fa19.2±0.2 (N=9). Pyroxene Fs16.8±0.2Wo1.6±0.1 (N=11). Plagioclase An12.1±0.5Ab 82.0±0.6Or5.9±0.3 (N=5). Classification: H5 Specimens: 326.519 g type specimen (main mass) held at the NHM London. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
