Northwest Africa 14440 (NWA 14440) Morocco Purchased: 2021 Classification: Pallasite-PMG History: Purchased by Jay Piatek from Habib Naji in 2021. Physical characteristics: Exterior is irregular, dark brown, and weathered lacking fusion crust. Saw cut surface shows angular cm-sized dark-orange, translucent olivine grains set in metal. There are also smaller scattered olivines set in the host metal. The modal abundances are approximately 60% metal, 40% olivine. Petrography: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) Reflected light microscopy and electron microprobe analysis reveal the presence olivine, kamacite, rare taenite, troilite, chromite and schreibersite. Geochemistry: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa12.0±0.2, Fe/Mn=39±3, Fe/Mg=0.14±0.00, n=6; kamacite Ni=6.8±0.1, Co=0.65±0.03 (wt%), n=5. Classification: Pallasite (main group) Specimens: 35 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
