Northwest Africa 6586 (NWA 6586)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2009

History: Many stones weighing 1019 g were found in Morocco in 2009. Thomas Webb acquired the sample from a meteorite prospector in Erfoud, 2009.

Physical characteristics: The weathered stones are brown and angular in shape. The stones lack any fusion crust. The cut face of the interior is gray with yellowish-green olivine crystals.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App): Sample is composed of weathered metals enclosing rounded olivine crystals. Olivine crystals are crosscut by FeOH minerals. Sample contains weathered troilite and accessory schreibersite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App): Olivine Fa13.4±0.2, N=8

Classification: Based on texture and chemistry, this is a Pallasite (PMG).

Specimens: Several individuals weighing 25.34 g, and a polished mount are currently on deposit at App.
