Northwest Africa 15183 (NWA 15183)

Find: 2020

Classification: Pallasite (Main group)

History: Purchased by Jay Piatek from Mostafa Hmini in 2021, reportedly found in 2020.

Physical characteristics: Seven identically appearing pieces found together. Dark brown-black exterior patina with some skeletal framing of olivine crystals. Saw cut slice shows angular to sub-rounded cm-sized green-orange, transparent to gemmy olivine grains set in metal. Etch-patterns reveal approximately equal amounts of kamacite and taenite. The modal abundances are approximately 60% olivne, 40% metal. Oxidation is minimal.

Petrography: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) Reflected light microscopy and electron microprobe analysis reveal the presence olivine, kamacite, taenite, troilite, merrillite and stanfieldite.

Geochemistry: (A. Ross, C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa12.0±0.2, Fe/Mn=44±3, Fe/Mg=0.14±0.00, n=6; kamacite Ni=7.0±0.3, Co=0.64±0.02 (wt%), n=2; taenite Ni=28.6±2.3, Co=0.25±0.02 (wt%), n=2.

Classification: Pallasite (main group)

Specimens: 25.3 g on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds a total of 250 g and the main mass of 101 g.
